GCI Director Professor Ove Hoegh-Guldberg is one of 27 UQ researchers to be named in a prestigious list of the world’s most highly cited researchers. In recognition of the fact his work has substantial influence across multiple fields, Professor Hoegh-Guldberg was named in a new cross-field category.

Many people in Australia do not have access to safe drinking water. It’s particularly difficult in Indigenous communities because they are small, remote and challenged by additional issues to secure essential power and water services. To make sure everyone has access to safe drinking water, we’ll have to get smarter about the way we treat it. Drinking water contamination can come from naturally occurring chemicals, such arsenic, cadmium, nitrates, uranium and barium. It can also come from microbes from sewage and animal wastes.

GCI Adjunct Associate Professor Chris McGrath has told a Gold Coast conference we need to fight for recognition that nature is the foundation for prosperity. In an address entitled: “Use whatever imperfect tools you have to fight for solutions”, Dr McGrath argued that society needed to overturn the pervasive – and false – narratives that say protecting the environment costs jobs.

A new science-driven strategy to save the Earth’s coral reefs proposes an “insurance policy” which focuses on saving the reefs that are most likely to survive global warming. University of Queensland Global Change Institute (GCI) Director Professor Ove Hoegh-Guldberg and colleagues have addressed two fundamental questions facing those championing coral reef preservation. “We needed to objectively identify coral reefs that are relatively less vulnerable to climate change and are better positioned to help the regeneration of other reefs in the future,” Professor Hoegh-Guldberg said.
